What to Expect with Blepharoplasty / Eyelid Surgery:

Eyelid surgery, also known as Blepharoplasty, is the surgical procedure to improve the appearance of your upper eyelid, lower eyelid or both. Droopy eyelids are considered to be a sign of age and progressively worsen with age. Droopy eyelids and bags under your eyes will make you look tired and older than you really feel. A blepharoplasty can greatly rejuvenate your entire look. It can be performed alone but is often combined with a facelift, browlift and/or necklift.

A blepharoplasty can treat sagging or loose skin tissue of the upper and lower eyelid. In extreme cases this tissue may sag enough to impair vision. Dr. Mentz may also remove excess fatty tissue that gives your eyes that baggy look. Incisions are typically made in the creases of your upper eyelids and just below the lashes in your lower eyelids, making scars virtually invisible. After the underlying fat and excess skin are removed, the incisions are closed with fine sutures designed to leave nearly invisible scars. In a Transconjuctival blepharoplasty Dr. Mentz will make the incision inside the lower eyelid. No skin is removed and the incision is closed with dissolving sutures. Dr. Mentz will help determine the best procedure for you and advise you on your choices. Eyelid surgery usually takes between one to two hours as an outpatient procedure under general or "twilight" anesthesia. Stitches are removed in less than one week and you can return to work in 5-7 days. Strenuous activities can be resumed in about three weeks. Scarring is usually minimal after three weeks and undetectable in six months. In addition to eyelid surgery, fine lines and light wrinkles can be erased from around your eyes with the CO2 laser procedure. This procedure can be performed as an outpatient with a local or general anesthesia and takes about 1-2 hours..
