What to Expect with Breast Reduction / Mammoplasty Surgery:
A breast reduction or reduction mammoplasty is the surgical reduction of the breasts. Excessively large breasts can cause a myriad of problems including back and neck pain, skin irritation, breathing difficulties, self esteem issues, and inability to lead an active life.
The procedure requires the removal of excess fat tissue and skin from the breast resulting in a smaller, lighter, and firmer breast. The nipple is also repositioned in proportion to the new breast size. It is recommended that the breast be fully developed before surgery is performed. If large breasts are causing serious problems, a surgeon may recommend this procedure for younger patients.
After your procedure the Dr. Mentz may offer a visit to your home by a plastic surgery nurse, trained to assist in your recovery. For several weeks following surgery you will be wearing a support bra to reduce swelling and bruising. After this time you will be able to select bras that enhance your new look. Most women can return to work in about two weeks but should avoid lifting or strenuous exercise for the next three to 4 weeks.
Patients should keep in mind that breast reduction should be postponed for women planning to breast feed. Surgery takes about 3-5 hours under general anesthesia and recovery is about 7-10 days.
